What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontic dentistry is a specialty field of dentistry that treats dental and facial irregularities. Braces, clear aligners, and other appliances can be used to adjust the alignment of teeth and jaws. In this article we’ll look at the process, advantages, and history behind orthodontic dentistry as well as maintenance.

What is the Orthodontic Treatment Process?

What happens during orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment usually entails several steps:

  1. Consultation – The initial step in orthodontic treatment is a consultation with an orthodontist. During this appointment, they will assess the patient’s dental and facial structure to determine the most suitable course of action.
  2. Diagnosis – Once an orthodontist has assessed a patient’s dental and facial structure, they will make a diagnosis and devise a treatment plan. This may involve taking x-rays or other diagnostic tests to gain more insight into the patient’s dental and facial structure.
  3. Treatment – The next phase in orthodontic treatment is the actual treatment phase. This may involve using braces, clear aligners, or other appliances to gradually shift teeth and jaws into their desired positions. The length of time required depends on how severe the dental and facial irregularities are as well as which type of treatment is being utilized.

Maintenance – After orthodontic treatment is complete, patients must wear a retainer to secure the teeth’s position and prevent them from shifting back to their original alignment.

Orthodontic Treatment’s Benefits

Are you considering orthodontic treatment? Here are some of the potential advantages.

Orthodontic treatment has many advantages for individuals with dental and facial irregularities. Some of the advantages of orthodontic treatment include:

  • Orthodontic Treatment Can Enhance Appearance – Orthodontic treatment can enhance the teeth and facial structure, leading to greater confidence and self-esteem.
  • Orthodontic Treatment Can Improve Oral Health – Orthodontic treatment can also benefit oral health by making brushing and flossing easier, decreasing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems.
  • Orthodontic Treatment Can Improve Bite – Orthodontic treatment can enhance the bite, making it simpler to chew and speak.
  • Reduced Risk of Trauma – Dental and facial irregularities can increase the potential for trauma to teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatment can reduce this likelihood by improving alignment between the teeth and jaws.
  • Reduced Risk of Sleep Apnea – Orthodontic treatment can also help to reduce the likelihood of sleep apnea by realigning jaws and creating an airway that is clear during REM sleep.

Types Of Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment can be used to address malocclusion or an improper bite. Today, there are various orthodontic treatments available to address these issues. Here are some of the most popular ones:

  • Traditional Braces – Traditional braces consist of metal brackets and wires attached to the teeth. The orthodontist adjusts these wires periodically in order to gradually shift the teeth into their correct positions.
  • Ceramic Braces – Ceramic braces function similarly to traditional braces, but are made of clear or tooth-colored brackets and wires that are less visible than metal braces.
  • Lingual Braces – Lingual braces are similar to traditional braces, except they are placed on the back of teeth instead of their front, making them less visible.
  • Self-Ligating Braces – Similar to traditional braces, self-ligating braces use a special clip instead of elastic bands for holding the wire in place. This reduces friction between the wire and brackets, providing for more comfortable treatment and fewer visits to the orthodontist.

Invisalign – Invisalign is a popular alternative to traditional braces. It uses a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually shift your teeth into their proper positions.

We Offer Invisalign Clear Aligners

Our clinic offers Invisalign Clear Aligner Braces as a clear, convenient, and nearly invisible alternative to traditional braces.

The treatment duration for Invisalign is similar to traditional braces. Even more exciting is Invisalign Teen, which now offers the clear alternative for patients as young as 13 years old. How do you get started with Invisalign?

Dr. Michelle Carlson and the dentists at Monterey Dental Centre are Certified Invisalign Providers. They have extensive experience with Invisalign.

The first step is to book a complimentary consultation with us. During the consultation, our dentists will discuss your case in detail to determine if you’re a good candidate for the Invisalign system. After answering all your questions, we will discuss how you can get started with Invisalign.

What are the Invisalign Aligners made from?

Your Invisalign aligners are a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners are created specifically for your orthodontic situation. They are are made from of a smooth, comfortable, BPA-free plastic that won’t irritate your cheeks and gums like traditional metal braces can.

All you need to do is simply wear your Invisalign aligners throughout the day and remove them when you eat or brush and floss your teeth. As you wear each set of aligners, your teeth will gently and gradually begin to move into position. Since the aligners are virtually invisible, you’ll be surprised that most people have not even noticed that you are wearing them!

How Long Does the Invisalign process take?

The length of Invisalign treatment varies by the needs of each patient. Typical treatment takes about nine months for adults. For teens, the length of treatment may be comparable to that of braces but can also be shorter!

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene During Orthodontic & Invisalign Treatment

It is essential to practice good oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment in order to maximize its success and avoid oral health issues. Here are some tips for maintaining excellent oral hygiene during braces:

  • Brushing – Brush your teeth at least twice daily with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste, using gentle pressure to avoid damaging any brackets or wires.
  • Maintain Your Teeth With Flossing – At least once daily, floss your teeth using an orthodontic floss threader to get under the wires and brackets. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and braces.
  • Rinsing with Water After Eating – After eating, rinse your mouth with water to help remove any food particles that may have become stuck in the braces or wires.
  • Orthodontic Wax – Orthodontic wax can be used to cover any sharp edges or wires that could cause mouth irritation.
  • Eating a Balanced Diet – Eating a balanced diet that is low in sugar and high in nutrients can help protect against tooth decay and other oral health issues.
  • Avoiding Certain Foods During Orthodontic Treatment – Certain foods should be avoided during orthodontic treatment, such as hard, sticky, and crunchy items that could damage the braces or wires.
  • Attending Regular Check-Ups with the Orthodontist – Regular visits with your orthodontist are essential for monitoring progress during treatment and making necessary adjustments if needed.
  • Wearing a Retainer After Orthodontic Treatment Is Complete – Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, wearing a retainer is essential to maintain the position of the teeth and prevent them from shifting back into their original positions. Your orthodontist will provide specific instructions regarding how often and for how long to wear the retainer.

By following these tips, patients can ensure the success of their orthodontic treatment and maintain good oral health. It’s essential to remember that orthodontic treatment is a long-term commitment and necessitates patience and dedication in order to see desired results.
